No place in the world or region had contributed to the world civilization such as that of the Mediterranean and its countries. France under President Sarkozi is pushing this plan hard.

14 July 2008 Tirana _ Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has given his backing to French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s efforts to create a union of Mediterranean states.

Speaking at the first summit of some 40 leaders between Europe and Mediterranean countries, Berisha strongly backed the new regional organisation.

“We believe that the strengthening of cooperation on both sides of the Mediterranean, is important not only for the region, but also has a global significance,” said Berisha.

“A union in the Mediterranean is the way for the implementation of common projects,” he added.
The meeting was attended by heads of state and government from the 27 European Union nations as well as from countries in North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. Read more: http://balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/11774/

The summit also marked return to the international stage fror Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who was seated at the same table as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

France hopes the new union for the Mediterranean will bolster regional cooperation and provide a new momentum for Middle East peace efforts.
