Shaikh Tantawi The Rector of Al-Azhar in Egypt Misrepresenting Jihad

Shaikh Tantawi The Rector of Al-Azhar in Egypt in interview with Christian missionaries indicated:
"The word Jihad actually means endeavoring to do good deeds and remove injustice, oppression and evil from society."
This shows a total lack of courage, dishonesty or sell out.
Actually, Islam in its early history spread by military Islamic conquests of foreign land to spread the message and not by self good deed as objective as he alludes to.
Although Islam conquered foreign lands there were compulsion to convert but only protection for who accepts Islam.
What prompted such conquests were the massacres of people who accepted Islam by the Christian authorities or by chiefs like in Syria at that time.
In another note Shaikh Tantawi The Rector of Al-Azhar in Egypt has been always very accessible to Christian missionaries who try to fool him or make him to slip or sell out as it happened few years ago when he signed a a document that allows Christians to conduct missionary work in the country of Egypt.
In a picture of Tantawi and Christian missionary Holland Taylor you can see Tylor standing next to Tantawi putting both hands in his pants pockets in total disrespect. There are other two christians missionaries in the picture as well. Sheikh Tantawi looking to the ground and sad. Why sheikh Tantawi act of self humiliation?
Can Sheikh Tantawi stop meeting with those Christian missionaries? Does the Pope has a fix on meeting with Islamic organization leaders?
