Taslima Nasreen to attend Swedish literary event
STOCKHOLM: Bangladeshi novelist Taslima Nasreen will on Tuesday make her first public appearance since she fled death threats from Islamic militants, organisers of a literary meeting in Sweden said.
Nasreen will join a round-table discussion in Stockholm with other writers also threatened in their own countries, organisers from the Writers' and Literary Translators' International Congress (WALTIC) said in a statement.
The 45-year-old gynaecologist-turned-author was recently granted a two-year safe haven in the Swedish town of Uppsala, 70 km from Stockholm, after living under Indian government protection in Kolkata.
She fled Bangladesh in 1994 after Islamic radicals accused her of blasphemy over her debut novel "Lajja" (Shame) which depicts the life of a Hindu family persecuted in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
Turkmen writer Yusuf Azemoun living in exile in Cyprus, will also participate in the round-table, WALTIC said.
"Their names have not been published until today because of threats that have been made against them," the statement said.
Under the slogan "A Dangerous Pursuit", the writers will discuss issues including: "What can writers do when freedom of speech is limited? How is it possible to continue to write?".
